How H. Kerndl GmbH simplifies its coding processes, avoids errors and minimizes downtime with the edding in-line 12
Reliable coding and marking in the chemical industry places the highest demands on precision, process reliability and system availability. H. Kerndl GmbH demonstrates how coding processes can be sustainably optimized with the edding in-line 12 – without any technical maintenance effort.
Company profile: H. Kerndl GmbH
H. Kerndl GmbH, headquartered in Weißenfeld near Munich, is a family-owned company operating in the chemical industry. Since its foundation in 1963, the company has evolved from a manufacturer of distilled water into a modern supplier of chemical-technical products.
Its product portfolio includes battery acid, cleaning agents and private label solutions marketed under the KERNDL brand name. The company’s own fleet of vehicles, together with established logistics partners, ensures reliable delivery to customers. With more than 40 employees and annual revenues of approximately €15 million, the company stands for quality, customer focus and environmental responsibility.
Challenge: error-prone coding with CIJ technology
Previously, Kerndl relied on Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) technology for coding. Print heads had to be manually adjusted for each product – a time-consuming and error-prone process. Coding alcoholic liquids proved particularly challenging. Codes had to be positioned precisely on a wide variety of container shapes and sizes to prevent any interference with the filling product. Even the slightest deviation could cause problems.
In addition, seasonal production slowdowns meant that CIJ printers sometimes remained idle for weeks. When restarting operations, technical issues frequently occurred, resulting in extended downtime. Overall, the previous solution was neither sufficiently user-friendly nor reliable enough for everyday production.
Solution: automated coding with the edding in-line 12
The system was directly integrated into the height adjustment of the labeling machines. As a result, the print head position now adjusts automatically with each product setting. A previously error-prone manual step has been completely eliminated. Especially in environments involving alcoholic liquids, this precise positioning ensures maximum safety. Any contact between the code and the filling product is reliably prevented.
Centralized management of print texts
Another key advantage is simplified operation: All product texts are preconfigured. Operators no longer need to create print data manually. Instead, print data is centrally managed via the network by the production manager, effectively eliminating mislabeling. In addition, the system is already prepared for ERP integration. In the future, production data can be automatically transferred to the printer via scanner – an important step toward a fully digitalized production process.
Result: near-zero error rate and maximum process reliability
By switching to the edding in-line 12, Kerndl was able to reduce the error rate in coding in the chemical industry to virtually zero. Production interruptions caused by printer maintenance or failures are now a thing of the past. The simplified operation reduces training efforts and sustainably increases process reliability.
Overall, the company saves time and costs while benefiting from smoother, more efficient and more reliable production processes.
“Switching to the edding in-line 12 was a complete success. Marking is now absolutely reliable and precise, with user errors virtually eliminated. The system runs stably and ensures smooth operations.” – Alexander Kerndl, Managing Director, H. Kerndl GmbH
