The EU Packaging Directive and recycling logos on packaging

in-line_25

The European Union (EU) has long been committed to taking measures to promote a sustainable environment and reduce packaging waste. An important regulation that pursues these goals is the Packaging Directive 94/62/EC. This directive establishes standards for packaging materials and provides guidelines for their reuse and recycling. A central aspect of this directive is the recycling codes found on packaging.

What is the EU Packaging Directive?

The EU Packaging Directive is a groundbreaking step by the European Union to address the challenge of packaging waste and reduce environmental impact. Its main goal is to decrease the generation of packaging waste and minimize the negative effects of packaging on the environment. With its binding effect on all EU member states, the directive plays a significant role in promoting a sustainable packaging industry and effectively managing packaging waste.

Marking

Recycling codes are a significant component of the EU Packaging Directive, serving to label packaging materials to facilitate their future reuse and recycling. These codes consist of the commonly recognized recycling symbol in the form of a triangle with arrows and a number within it. The numbers indicate the material from which the corresponding product is made. Each number represents a specific type of material. Below is an overview of the recycling codes according to the EU Packaging Directive 94/62/EC:

Implementation

The EU Packaging Directive establishes general requirements, while the precise implementation occurs within the national laws of the member states. This ensures that the directive is implemented in each country according to specific circumstances and requirements. To achieve the goals, all EU countries must recycle at least 65% of all packaging waste by 2025 and at least 70% by 2030. This requires introducing packaging recycling systems, establishing producer responsibility, and meeting basic requirements such as minimum volume and weight, as well as restricting harmful materials.

Our Contribution to a Sustainable Future

In this context, edding printing systems provide a suitable solution for implementing the requirements of the EU Packaging Directive. We offer a wide range of printing systems that are ideal for applying recycling logos to packaging. This includes integration into automated production (edding in-line 12 / 25 / PRO) as well as mobile re-labeling (edding portable 12 / 25).

By combining the EU Packaging Directive with the advantages of edding printing systems, companies can ensure that their packaging complies with legal requirements while also being environmentally friendly. Applying recycling logos with edding printing systems signals companies’ commitment to sustainability and enhances consumer trust.
